1. Self-analysis: your qualifications and job preferences
There are so many positions you cannot apply for because you have not been formally trained to perform in those positions.
A graduate of Banking and Finance cannot apply for medical or engineering job, while a graduate of Communication and Language Arts should not expect himself or herself to be employed as a laboratory scientist.
So first step in a job search is to analyse your qualifications, strengths and interests.
Most of us do not know our skills, personal attributes, experiences and accomplishments, and this prevents us from positioning ourselves appropriately for employment.
2. Gather information about employment opportunities under your preferences
A good employee does not wait till after graduation before he or she begins to gather information about job opportunities in his area(s) of specialisation.
You should know all the available jobs in the areas and where they are offered.
So many graduates are waiting for chairmen, governors and other political functionaries to declare vacancies and encourage party members to apply and be employed.
Meanwhile, there are many private companies with better opportunities and career development prospects that they have left untapped.
Nowadays in Nigeria, apart from positions advertised in the media, there are many other unsolicited/unadvertised positions for people who are inquisitive and daring.
Many organisations do not shout; they usually encourage talented and motivated job-seekers who have what it takes to approach them, drop their resumes and request for an opportunity to be heard.

3. Develop your resumes or CV
Poorly packaged resume or curriculum vitae cannot sell you to your prospective employer.
It should be written clearly and concisely since employers have been said to spend only about 30 seconds per resume in their first screenings.
Employers are interested in an applicant with the right experience, skills, and personal qualities; you must show that you possess these with your curriculum vitae.

4. Write application letters
An application letter is a cover letter that accompanies your curriculum vitae, which gives an opportunity to make important points that you cannot include in your resume.
It presents an opportunity to sell yourself to your prospective employer, and it even shows an employer that you know how to write a letter.
An application letter should follow the established guidelines for writing letter.
5. Prepare for and attend job interviews
Your resume and application letter determine whether your potential employer will invite you for an interview or not.
Before and when you are invited for an interview, prepare adequately for it.
The first thing you must do is to research the company by gathering information its mission, vision, products, services, structure, salary range for the position you have applied, its scope of operation (local or international), how long it has been in business etc.
If you fail at this stage, you cannot get the job. You need to anticipate questions that will be asked and adequately prepare to answer them by getting a friend who will serve as your as your interviewer during a practice.

6. Prepare other employment communication
You do not go to sleep after the interview. You should continue to monitor your application using telephone calls, letters, e-mail and personal contacts.
If some people assisted you in your job campaign, you may need to appreciate their efforts.
Also, you may want to resign from a job after you have been notified of your appointment by a new company; you may also want to communicate your acceptance or rejection of an offer of appointment or follow up a pending application.
All of these require communication strategies and they are important in employment communication.
Conclusion:
Getting a job requires adequate preparation and understanding of the stages involved in employment communication.
An applicant must prepare to communicate appropriately when analysing his or her qualifications, obtaining information about the employer, developing resume, writing an application letter, participating in a job interview and preparing other employment communication.
