Reasons Why You’re Not Dreaming Anymore

Too many reasons why you’re not dreaming anymore are owing to several conditions and situations. Many of these reasons are what we are concerned about right here in this content. Science hasn’t been able to fully explain the purpose of dreaming. It may be a way to help us process emotions and make sense of the world. That’s probably why even the most outlandish dreams contain snippets of reality.

You might remember a dream in intricate detail, as vivid as anything you’ve ever experienced. Or you might wake up with the faint hint of a dream that fades away before you can fully grasp it.

Maybe you can’t remember even the tiniest sliver of a dream. It’s unlikely that you never, ever dream, though you could be in a dry spell because you’re not sleeping well. Or it could be that you simply can’t recall your dreams. One of the functional purposes of dreaming is moving information from your short-term to your long-term memory.

That movement of data, we think, is represented in your brain as this kind of fantastical imagery we call dreams.

Reasons Why You’re Not Dreaming Anymore

Most of us have 4 to 6 dreams a night, but we forget the vast majority of them. The dream you’re most likely to remember is the one you had just before waking up. As if forgetting dreams is not problem in itself, worse is the situation that you can no longer dream at all. Well, here are some of the reasons why you’re not dreaming anymore. This may provide another way out for you to wriggle yourself out!

Stress

Consider one of sleep’s worst enemies; stress has been found in research to not only disrupt and reduce REM sleep2 but also increase the number of awakenings during the night. Both of these things can make it harder to for you to dream.

Your diet

Your diet isn’t only affecting your body while you’re awake, it is also affecting your ability to dream. Research shows a diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber, and limited vegetable oils is conducive to a good night’s sleep.

Trauma

You can think of trauma like stress but it is much more intense than the latter. Trauma can certainly lead to insomnia but also a total suppression of dream recall or even total erosion of the potentials to dream at all. This may positively be in an effort to forget painful nightmares.

Substances

Constant bad news can also cause the lack of having dreams. It is for anyone who enjoys a glass of wine before bed—it’s likely messing with your sleep. Research shows alcohol before bed, as well as marijuana3, negatively affect REM sleep and dream itself.

Certain Medications

According to sleep expert and NYU professor Girardin Jean-Louis Ph.D., “Certain medications could affect REM cycles—or reduce dreams or nightmares.”

Waking Up Fast

According to psychologist and dream expert, waking up early can painfully make you forget your dreams or make you lose the chances of having dreams at all. Grogginess is an exquisite hybrid state of consciousness and that period where you’re just easing out of sleep seems important for dream erosion.

Sleep Disorder

Sleep disorders may impact dream. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea may also contribute to fragmented REM sleep as disturbed breathing occurs due to the relaxation of the airway muscles. For some, this may lead to increased erosion of dream.
