How Did IAUE Came To Be?

Ignatius Ajuru University of Education IAUE was first recognised as Rivers State College of Education from June 1971 to October 2009. It is located in Port Harcourt, Rivers. At the outset until 2009, the school had been a college of education, thereby solely building and training up teachers simply for the educational sector of the state and the country at large.

However, around 1980, the Government made known her intention to start up degree programmes in educational fields in the school. The Rivers State Government agreed to sponsor the programme in order to increase the number of teachers in the State.

Prof. G.O.M. Tasie was then appointed Provost of the College and was taxed with the duty of upgrading the college to a degree-awarding institution. The following academic year witnessed the actual admission of candidates for degree programmes in Rivers State College of Education after his appointment.

Rivers State College of Education was the only higher institution, who was affiliated to University of Ibadan, that offered the Bachelor of Education degree programme nonetheless.

After serious deliberations on the need to make moves for development, the Rivers State Government decided to convert Rivers State College of Education into a university in 2009 to further provide opportunities for high quality education for Nigerians especially indigenes of the State.

It is no longer news that many NCE holders from the school also planned to step up academically through the acquisition of university degrees. To them, they saw it was better oportunity to further their education in the same school they finished from.

Therefore, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education was established by the University of Education Law No. 8 of 2009 of the Rivers State Government passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly on 15 October 2009 and was approved by His Excellency, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, the then Executive Governor of Rivers State on 20 October 2009.

IAUE became the second state-owned University, while Prof. Okey Onuchukwu is its current Vice-Chancellor.
