The school was founded in 1947 as Sacramento State College and that is why it is the eleventh oldest institution in the California State University system. The university enrolls approximately 31,500 students annually, 31,573 in Fall 2021.
As the sixth-largest campus of the 23 state universities in California, it also has a campus that covers a range of 305 acres (123 ha), with over 3,500 trees and over 1,200 resting in the University Arboretum. The university is home to one site of the National Register of Historic Places, the Julia Morgan House.
According to the Arbor Day Foundation in 2012, SSU was officially declared the university Tree Campus USA. Sacramento State is an Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) and is eligible to be designated as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander serving institution (AANAPISI).

Course Requirements
The following courses have been approved to meet the 48-unit General Education pattern required of Sacramento State students. At least 9 units must be in upper division GE courses (100-199) from Areas B, C, and D taken after you complete 45 units of coursework.
Enrollment in upper division General Education courses is limited to students who have completed Areas A1, A2, A3. Upper division General Education courses must be completed in residence with the CSU.
