Bill Belichick has an all time record and career success paragon when it comes to the world of sports. Widely regarded as one of the greatest head coaches of all time, he holds numerous coaching records, including the record of most Super Bowl wins (six) as a head coach, all with the New England Patriots.
This, along with two more during his time as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, h achieved as a coach and coordinator for the record of eight combined total Super Bowl victories.
Born in April 16, 1952, Belichick is an American legendary football coach. Belichick is often referred to as a “student of the game” with a deep knowledge of the intricacies of each player position. Under his tenure with the Patriots, he was a central figure as the head coach and de facto general manager during the franchise’s dynasty from 2001 to 2019.
Career and Journey in the Coaching Profession
After graduating, Belichick took a $25-per-week job as an assistant to Baltimore Colts head coach Ted Marchibroda in 1975. In 1976, he joined the Detroit Lions as their assistant special teams coach before adding tight ends and wide receivers to his coaching duties in 1977.
He was dismissed along with head coach Tommy Hudspeth and the rest of the coaching staff on January 9, 1978. He spent the 1978 season with the Denver Broncos as their assistant special teams coach and defensive assistant, which also serving as director of films.
From 1991 until 1995, Belichick was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. During his tenure in Cleveland, he compiled a 36–44 record, leading the team to the playoffs in 1994, his only winning year with the team. His one playoff victory during his Browns tenure was achieved against the New England Patriots, who were coached by former Giants head coach Bill Parcells, in the Wild Card Round during that postseason.
After first being given assurances that he would coach the new team that would later become the Baltimore Ravens, Belichick was instead fired on February 14, 1996, one week after the shift was officially announced.
After his dismissal by the Cleveland Browns, Belichick served under Parcells again as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach with the Patriots for the 1996 season. The Patriots finished with an 11–5 record and won the AFC Championship over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Belichick had two stints as the head coach of the New York Jets without ever coaching a game. In February 1997, Belichick, who had been an assistant coach under Bill Parcells with the New York Giants and New England Patriots, was named the Jets interim head coach.
Six days later the Patriots and Jets reached an agreement that allowed Parcells to coach the Jets, and Belichick became the team’s assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.
When Parcells stepped down as head coach after the 1999 season, he had already arranged with team management to have Belichick succeed him. On January 4, 2000, when Belichick was introduced as head coach to the media—the day after his hiring was publicized—he turned it into a surprise resignation announcement.

- On top of the 266 regular-season victories he posted with New England, Belichick added 31 more – another record – in the postseason. Counting his tenure with the Cleveland Browns (1991-95), Belichick has 333 career victories.
- Belichick went 266-121 in the regular season. His 2007 team had an undefeated regular-season campaign, while his 2023 squad posted a 4-13 mark, the most dismal season of his time with the Patriots.
- Belichick had 19 consecutive winning seasons (2001-2019). He won 17 division titles during that span, which is another record of his.
- Belichick’s Patriots won nine AFC championship games (and appeared in the game 13 times). He was 6-3 in the Super Bowl, and the nine appearances in the big game are a record for any head coach.
- Two of his three Super Bowl losses came to the Giants and another was at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles.
- Belichick was 83-104 overall in games coached without Tom Brady as his starting quarterback. He was 29-39 (counting playoffs) since Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. Brady retired last offseason.
- Brady won three MVPs with Belichick as his coach.
- Belichick won six Super Bowls − the most for any head coach − with the Patriots.
