The Major Tribes in Zamfara State

The major tribes in Zamfara State are only two. Historically, the state is a densely populated area with the Hausa and Fulani peoples. Although not so populated, Zamfara is recorded to have a population of 9,278,873 according to the 2006 census. It is bordered to the north by the Republic of the Niger, to the south by Kaduna State, to the east by Katsina State, and to the west by the states of Sokoto, Kebbi and Niger. It contains fourteen LGAs.

The state capital is an important commercial center with a heterogeneous population of people from all over Nigeria. As in all major towns in Nigeria, all the major towns in Zamfara have a large population of other peoples from different parts of Nigeria.

The Major Tribes in Zamfara State

Zamfara State is mainly populated by Hausa and Fulani people, with some members of Gwari, Kamuku, Kambari, Dukawa, Bissa (Bussawa and Zabarma ethnic communities.   • Hausa Tribe

The Hausa tribe is one of the major tribes in Nigeria as well as the biggest tribe in the whole of West Africa. This tribe is very popular and influential occupies the Burkura part of Zamfara. As a result of the influence level of this tribe, most other minority tribes in Northern Nigeria have adopted their traditions and cultural values.

The Hausa are farmers and predominantly Muslims. People from the Hausa tribe do not only exist in Nigeria. There are Hausa people in other parts of Africa also. There are no clear details about the history and origin of the Hausa people. However, it is believed that these people originated from the Middle East. This is because apart from the fact that the Hausas are Muslims, a lot of their beliefs are in line with beliefs of the Arabs.

Hausa men are known to dress in flowing gowns known as Babban riga while their women tie wrapper on blouse and cover their heads with hijabs.

  • Fulani Tribe

The Fulani tribe is one of the largest tribes in Nigeria. Fulani people in Zamfara occupy Gusau, Bungudu and Marandu. The Fulani tribe is the most politically influential tribe in Nigeria. This tribe can be found in some other African countries other than Nigeria. There are over 40 million people in this tribe. The Fulani people are cattle rearers and speak Fulfulde. They are also almost entirely Muslims.

The people of the Fulani tribe have a lot in common with the Hausa and are often mistaken for Hausa by people from southern Nigeria. The Fulanis are nomads and are known for rearing cattle across the country. Fulani men wear flowing gowns that are called Babban riga while their women tie wrapper on a blouse and put on the hijab. Fulani women are known to be slim and exception    ally beautiful. Meals eaten by this people are usually made from maize and millet.
