Largest Local Government in Edo State.

Local government areas in Edo State are many and only one is the largest local government in Edo State.  It is also known for the fact that it is the most populated part of the region. The Edo people are internationally recognized for their art. Ivory masks dating back to the Benin Empire are perhaps one of the Kingdom’s most memorable legacies. Brass works are also a cornerstone of Edo art and culture.

The ancient city of Edo, the site of modern-day Benin City, was home to some of the largest earthworks in the world.

In 1897, the British Empire conducted a punitive expedition of the region, destroying most of the ancient city of Edo and incorporating the territory into what would become the Southern Nigeria Protectorate.

Official Language of Edo

English is the official language of the state. The major tribal languages spoken in the state are Edo language, Igarra, Etsako/Afemai, Esan and Okpamheri. Edo State is home to several ethnicities, among them the Edo, Okpe, Esan, Afemai/Etsako, Ora, Akoko-Edo, Igbanke, Ema.

Religion

Christianity is the major religion practiced in Edo State, although minority of the population practice Islam and traditional worship.

The city is also convenient for businesses of various kinds that at the end of the day is liable for profitability.

Relationship With the Yoruba People

Yorubaland is the cultural region of the Yoruba people in West Africa. It spans the modern-day countries of Nigeria, Togo, and Benin. Its pre-modern history is based largely on oral traditions and legends. The Yorubas and the Edos are actually related ancestrally but they are equally at each others’ throat when they get to meet . This clash borders on seniority and respect. The Yoruba believe that they are the leaders of the pair and the edo man has its own opinon to the contrary.

Favorite Food of the Edo People

Edo was the birthplace of sushi as we know it today — hand-pressed balls of rice topped with the fruits of the neighboring sea, known as edomae sushi (literally, “in front of Edo” sushi), evolved to what we know today as simply “nigiri sushi.” Other popular dishes included dojo (loach) nabe, anago (conger eel), miso, etc.

The people of Edo state are mainly engaged in subsistence and cash crops farming. A number of them are also into poultry, piggery and fishing.

It is considered the largest local government in Edo State among those in Benin City. It comprises towns and communities such as Idumodin, Ottah, Edummungba, Egbhuru, Egbokor, Ute – Oheze, Ugo, Urhonigbe, Igbanke, Iru egbede, Evbobanosa, Oza, Ogan, Uson, Oloten, Obagie N’Oheze, Idumiru, Idumwebo, Numagbae, Ugokoniro, Ukpato, Igbekhue, iguehanza, Obozogbe-niro and Obi.
